Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders On Cinco De Mayo 2017?
Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders Possible in May 2017
Cinco de Mayo falls on a Friday in 2017, so Saturday, May 6th is the virtually-guaranteed date when Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will fight next year, and because the Mexican superstar is recovering from a broken right thumb, he will most likely not fight before then. So the big question is, who will emerge as an opponent worthy of taking on the sport’s top PPV star on the biggest weekend of the year for his fans?
WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders would be an excellent match-up for Canelo’s 2017 debut. The 27-year-old Brit has a decent following in England, has a middleweight belt, and is not a huge puncher. If Alvarez is to face Gennady Golovkin at 160 pounds in late 2017, than he will need a fight or two at 160 to prepare (he has previously fought at 155 pounds), so why not fight Saunders and pick up a legit middleweight belt to make a fight with Golovkin a unification bout?
Canelo is now the WBO champion at 154 pounds after beating Liam Smith in September, and there have been talks of the WBO being interested in a fight between Alvarez and Saunders. Saunders, who faces Artur Akavov on November 26th, has also been openly critical of Canelo, calling him a coward for having refused to fight Golovkin by now.
